The New Capital Swiss Select Equity Fund launched in 2014 under Urs Beck and taps into one of the strongest economies in the world.
Switzerland has several advantages from both a market and macro perspective: the stock market is large and liquid, inflation has been low over the long term and, compared with many of its European peers, the country has the flexibility of its own currency.
With the Swiss National Bank removing the cap on the franc in 2015, there is scope for the currency to appreciate further.
As a fairly small country, most Swiss companies tend to have an international presence as they come up against geographical boundaries early in their life. This means Swiss equities are a global play that benefit from many local advantages.
While New Capital is a macro-driven house, we give our managers the flexibility to add alpha via stockpicking and see real advantages in local expertise.
Manager Urs Beck is an experienced investor in Swiss equities, with a long track record of analysing companies in the region. He looks for businesses where management has a solid strategic plan and the means to realise it – and where the valuation is in line with that growth potential.
We focus on active management at New Capital and Beck believes a higher tracking error is vital for performance in a market where giant companies, such as Roche, Nestle and Novartis, dominate the benchmark. The fact that the Fund started from scratch in 2014 – and therefore has no legacy investing in these blue-chips – allows for a more entrepreneurial management style.
Local knowledge is key for this mandate, but it also benefits from our macro-driven culture at New Capital. It is vital to look past geographical boundaries and understand what is happening on a global scale, particularly as so many Swiss businesses have an international footprint.
